‘Back to The Future’ Exhibition

Designer and maker Paul Floyd gets selected for prestigious and historically important ‘Back to The Future’ exhibition at Broadfield House Glass Museum.

To celebrate the 400th anniversary of glassmaking in the Stourbridge area and the International Festival of Glass 2012, this exhibition seeks to explore the world-renowned glass collections and archives at Broadfield House Glass Museum and show how inspiring these collections are to contemporary West Midlands glassmakers.

‘Back to the Future’ is an exhibition of new work by contemporary West Midlands glass artists at Broadfield House Glass Museum and runs till 27 January 2013.

The exhibition is sponsored by Interiors & Lifestyle Futures and the Friends of Broadfield House Glass Museum.  Photography by Simon Bruntnell.

Stourbridge DFAS ‘Young Arts’ Project

The National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS) is a leading arts charity which opens up the world of the arts through a network of local Societies and national events.

Stourbridge Decorative and Fine Art Society (NADFAS) are sponsoring a striking piece of stained glass to commemorate the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The stained glass project has been led by Paul Floyd of Transparent Glass Studio and has been designed and made by students from the Glasshouse College in Stourbridge.

Student Alex Timbrell who has created the original glass design explains:

‘When I was pondering the design, I was thinking back to when I first learnt about the Olympic Games and I thought of a simple description, I thought of the torch.  The glasswork itself represents the torch, but also the Greek Sun God Apollo, who gives light to the day on his chariot of horses and to bring a new dawn to the future’

Student Zoe Montgomerie has used traditional stained glass and modern fused glass techniques to realise the design:

‘I really enjoyed making the fused glass flame for the middle of the piece and cutting some of the glass for the stained glass panel’

Both students have been helped and guided by Glass Artist & Designer Paul Floyd, whose studio is based at the Ruskin Glass Centre in Stourbridge.

Stourbridge DFAS Young Arts Representative, Ann Norgate, said: “One of the Society’s aims is to encourage children and young people to participate in the arts.  We are very excited by this wonderful piece of work created by students at Glasshouse College.  It is one of the most important projects we have supported.”

“Supporting Young Arts is one of the most important activities within our Society,”  said Meriel Harris, Chairman of Stourbridge DFAS, “and we are proud to have established this important link of co-operation with Glasshouse College and the Ruskin Glass Centre during 2012 which marks 400 years of glassmaking Stourbridge.”

The finished stained glass art work will be displayed in the new Glasshouse Arts Centre which is due to open in August 2012.

Craft and Design Month May 2012

Craft & Design Month May 2012 Logo

Transparent Glass Studio is supporting Craft and Design Month May 2012 – a brand new initiative designed to raise awareness of the enormous amount of creative talent we have in this country.

Transparent Glass Studio and the Ruskin Glass Centre will be sharing some of this talent with you by running a series of glass workshops, demonstrations and an ‘open studio’ event.  Craft and Design Month is the perfect time to see the craftspeople working in their studios & try something new.

Craft and Design Month is a ‘not for profit’ initiative launched by craft&design  magazine.  The magazine’s editor, Angie Boyer, explains: “There are many thousands of craftsmen and women who manufacture and sell their products in the UK and to the overseas markets who are completely overlooked by newspapers reporting on the demise of domestic manufacturing.

“In fact, the Crafts Council has reported that there are around 35,000 contemporary craftsmen and women with a collective turnover of around £1billion.  Crafts is incredibly important to the economy but also to our wellbeing and way of life.  If we don’t use the talents of people on our doorstep, they will disappear forever.  We hope that by shining the spotlight on the skills of craftsmen and women throughout the country, the general public will think twice about who to go to when they need something for the home.   If we succeed in that, Craft and Design Month will have served its purpose.”

Craft and Design Selected Awards

Designer and maker Paul Floyd gets selected for a page in Craft&Design online gallery.

‘These highly regarded national awards, first launched in 2009, are based on an Online Public Vote for British and Irish designer makers with work represented in Selected, craft&design’s prestigious online gallery at www.craftmaker.co.uk.’

‘Craft and design is alive and thriving in Britain today and these Awards successfully promote the work of talented designer makers internationally – not only to those who already have an awareness of the skills involved, but also to people who may not have yet discovered this wealth of creative talent. The Online Public Vote enables people to browse the site, vote for their favourite makers – and at the same time discover new and exciting work by craftsmen and women unknown to them’.  Craft&design 2012
