Stourbridge DFAS ‘Young Arts’ Project

The National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS) is a leading arts charity which opens up the world of the arts through a network of local Societies and national events.

Stourbridge Decorative and Fine Art Society (NADFAS) are sponsoring a striking piece of stained glass to commemorate the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The stained glass project has been led by Paul Floyd of Transparent Glass Studio and has been designed and made by students from the Glasshouse College in Stourbridge.

Student Alex Timbrell who has created the original glass design explains:

‘When I was pondering the design, I was thinking back to when I first learnt about the Olympic Games and I thought of a simple description, I thought of the torch.  The glasswork itself represents the torch, but also the Greek Sun God Apollo, who gives light to the day on his chariot of horses and to bring a new dawn to the future’

Student Zoe Montgomerie has used traditional stained glass and modern fused glass techniques to realise the design:

‘I really enjoyed making the fused glass flame for the middle of the piece and cutting some of the glass for the stained glass panel’

Both students have been helped and guided by Glass Artist & Designer Paul Floyd, whose studio is based at the Ruskin Glass Centre in Stourbridge.

Stourbridge DFAS Young Arts Representative, Ann Norgate, said: “One of the Society’s aims is to encourage children and young people to participate in the arts.  We are very excited by this wonderful piece of work created by students at Glasshouse College.  It is one of the most important projects we have supported.”

“Supporting Young Arts is one of the most important activities within our Society,”  said Meriel Harris, Chairman of Stourbridge DFAS, “and we are proud to have established this important link of co-operation with Glasshouse College and the Ruskin Glass Centre during 2012 which marks 400 years of glassmaking Stourbridge.”

The finished stained glass art work will be displayed in the new Glasshouse Arts Centre which is due to open in August 2012.
